Query Screen Asks the database
questions based on the selections you choose from the drop down lists
and/or the fill in boxes. |
Refine Query
Reduces the number of possible results based on previous
selections; it then changes all the drop down lists to reflect your choices.
|
The *
is a wildcard; it is the default. The * allows
all possible values from that field to be used in the query.
Leaving it blank,
rather than guessing, often produces the best results.
|
Retrieve goes to the
database with the parameters you have selected and fetches back all
the values that fit those criteria.
|
Drop Down Lists
provide you with all the possible entries for that item from the database.
Select the arrow on the right with your mouse button to see the list.
If there is no list, you may enter a word, but, see hints.
|
New Query Clears all entries
from the form and returns to the database to get the complete set of values
again, so you can start anew.
|
Making things run smoothlyHints: |
Start with a limited selection, see what you get back. It is not
always advantageous to fill in lots of the options. Try using refine to
preview the returned information.
|
Use the number per page box to select how many records will be loaded before
you can preview them.
|
If you leave all the choices as the * wildcard, you will get all the records
returned. Warning! it may take a long time, or you may overwhelm your local
machine with data.
